Community Access Unlimited was founded in 1979 åÊin Union County, NJ with a single $90,000 grant to move 20 individuals with developmental disabilities from state institutions and place them successfully in the community.åÊ CAU first operated out of the executive director, Sidney BlanchardÛªs Volkswagen Beetle soon moving into a small office with an initial staff of three. Today, CAU employs over 1,200 staff and operates a $62 million budget.
CAU is more than a nonprofit organization ÛÒ we are a growing social movement comprised of passionate advocates and community organizers, nurses, social workers, and support and administrative staff, all working to provide community integrated support services to over 6000 people throughout New Jersey. This has been accomplished through strategic financial partnerships, funding diversification and by avoiding overreliance on government funds and the restrictions that come with government funding.
CAU has grown our highly successful financial model through valuable partnerships with local bankers and financial institutions who partner with us to mutually benefit our communities.åÊ The members CAU supports include individuals with disabilities, at-risk youth, and people in need of affordable housing. We continue to support our mission and provide our members with åÊessential resources that will allow them to live independently and lead normal and productive lives as citizens in the community.
